Once upon a time, a stray tabby was taken from the streets of Brooklyn and put in an animal shelter. The poor kitten was suffering from severe pneumonia and a collapsed lung. He was given medical care and adopted by Assistant District Attorney Carol Moran. She nursed him back to health. She named him Fred in honor of Fred Weasley from the Harry Potter series. One day, Miss Moran was informed of a complaint about a man who was pretending to be a veterinarian and operating on pets without a license or training. The New York Police Department and the District Attorney’s office wanted to catch him in the act. Miss Moran volunteered Fred for a sting operation. He went through training which basically was to get him to act like a cat.  Fred became an undercover kitty. A cop in plains clothes took Fred to the fake vet for neutering. Mee ouch!  Not to worry, Fred had been promised that he would not actually have the operation. This was important because the vet had performed some botched operations on pets. Fred remained calm when the faux vet examined him. Before the man started operating on Fred, he was handcuffed and arrested. He did a high paw with the cop and he got a kitty treat. Fred became a celebrity. He was given the Law Enforcement Appreciation Award. The fearless feline was given an honorary badge for his collar. He encouraged callers to contribute money for animal shelters on an adopt-a-thon held on tv and hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters. Fred was being trained as a therapy animal when he got loose and was hit by a car. Fred the undercover kitty died at only 15 months old. His obituary appeared in the New York Times and the New York Post. He is one of the most famous cats in the history of law enforcement.
