After Becket’s martyrdom, legends grew about him.  Supposedly, he turned water into wine twice while dining with the Pope.  But accidentally since he would not have wanted to be pretentious.  He was known for not only wearing hair shirts to torture himself, but he also wore hair underpants.  In one legend, he was in his austere living quarters darning his hair drawers when a saintly woman appeared and did the sewing for him.  The woman was the Virgin Mary.  He once was at a banquet with the King of France when the Queen noticed something squirming under his sleeves.  His cuffs were tight around his wrists, so what appeared to be maggots were not able to fall out.  The queen insisted that Becket open the cuffs and when he did, diamonds fell onto the table.  When the holy man replaced the diamonds back into his sleeves, they resumed squirming.
