Albert Einstein was once traveling on a train when the conductor came down the aisle asking each person for their ticket. When he got to the great genius, Einstein looked all through his clothes and could not find the ticket. The conductor told him: “That’s okay, Mr. Einstein, I know who you are, don’t worry about the ticket.” The conductor moved on to another car. When he was retracing his steps back to the front of the train, he encountered Einstein again. Now, Einstein was on his hands and knees searching on the floor for his ticket. The conductor stopped and told him: “Mr. Einstein, I know who you are, you don’t have to find your ticket.” Einstein: “I know who I am, too. What I don’t know is where I am going.”

This seems like it is an apocryphal story that taps in to Einstein’s supposed absentmindedness, but I was unable to prove it is made up.
