One of America’s greatest scientists was born on Jan. 10, 1864.  Here are the notes I gave to my American History classes.

  • born a slave
  • raised by ex-slave owner after being orphaned
  • graduated from college
  • became director of agricultural research at Tuskegee University under Booker T. Washington
  • developed many products for peanuts and recipes with peanuts goobers
  • encouraged planting of peanuts and soy beans to restore soil fertility depleted by cotton
  • peanuts became the second largest cash crop in the South
  • passed on agricultural discoveries of others to improve lives of poor farmers
  • accomplished pianist and artist
  • visited several Presidents (TR, CC, FDR)
  • left life savings to help black college students
  • “99% of failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses”
  • “Where there is no vision, there is no hope”
  • “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because some day in life you will have been all these.”
