On his return from India, Alexander and his army had to traverse the very dry Gedrosian Desert.  At one point, the army was down to its last canteen of water.  It was brought to Alexander.  He asked if there was enough for everyone and when he was told no, he poured the contents onto the ground.  My opinion:  This anecdote is told to show how Alexander cared for the welfare of his men and was one of them.  What most people don’t know is Alexander was responsible for their predicament.  When his men had mutinied and refused to go further east, Alexander relented but decided to pay them back by taking the most difficult route home – the Gedrosian Desert.  A large number of his men died along the way.
