In 1898, Morgan Robertson published a novel entitled Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan  which was about the sinking of an ocean liner on a cold night in April, 900 miles from New York.  His ship had a triple screw like the Titanic.  It was 882 feet long, the Titanic was 800.  It was about 70,000 tons, the Titanic was 66,000.  Both could carry about 3,000 passengers. (The Titan had 2,500 on board, the Titanic 2,250)  The Titan was sailing from Southampton, Great Britain to NYC (the Titanic was doing the opposite). Many of the passengers were the cream of high society.  Both ships were the largest passenger ships in the world.  Both were going around 25 knots.  Both were hit on their starboard side after midnight.  Both did not have enough lifeboats.  The Titan had 24 and the Titanic had 20.  Both claimed to be unsinkable. There was one difference.  Robertson’s protagonist survives and kills a polar bear on the iceberg.
